Is this computer making me blind? Can't read fine print anymore up close.

Four years ago I had the best vision possible, I still see great far away, anything up close anymore I have to move the page back about 6 inches for it to focus....it freaked me out at first but I've gotten use to it.

I sit about 4 feet from my 23 inch monitor and spend many many hours in front of it.

Have I trained my eyes to see print further away by spending so much time on the computer? Or am I just getting old?

People over 40 typically have troubles focusing up close. Hence the need for bifocals in some people. You're just getting old.

On the other hand, my eye doctors said that myopia (near-sightedness) is almost unheard of in illiterate countries.

Interesting...but I have to wonder how accurate the tests are that they use to determine that. I do know that it's harder to test children for near-sightedness before they are literate.

Although I suppose they could use shapes instead of letters, since that's all letters really are...

This may turn into a late night of research:ohno:

I too have always had perfect vision, and sit in front of a computer all day long. My problem is just the reverse. I am having a hell of a time focusing on things at a distance. Everything at a distance now is very blurry. It has happened almost overnight. Perfect vision, then bam can't see shit.

I can stillsee far away like the 6 million dollar man...I can see small writing that my 9 year old can't from long distances...LOL, then I hold up a box of cereal and can't read how much fiber til I move it back 8 inches, very frustrating.

Journeyman,
I read your post and i thought i wrote it. I have the exact same thing happening to me. Good vision my whole life and now recently cant see up close anymore. Its a friggin bitch trying to read something in the grocery store. I think your right about the computer thing, because i have all kinds of tests, with the doctors finding nothing wrong. Even had an mri done, to rule out something in the brain. Your reason for the bad eye sight never crossed my mind, but i really believe you are right, we are training our eyes to see things at the distance we sit away from the computer. Well if you find out anything else, post here

My eyes, for reading purposes, are finally starting to feel strain.

Investing in a new monitor soon and hope that will help somewhat.

Why would you ever want something closer than 8 inches to your eyes?

I was wondering why you would have an MRI done, I mean its not like uncommon for this to happen, or maybe your case is a little more extreme I don't know...I wouldn't say my eyes are bad , I freak at the slightest changes! Fist time I realized it, I was lost and pulled out a map, it was dark out I turned on the light in the car opened the map book and couldn't see the street names! At first I thought it was my eyes hadn't adjusted from dark to light but as it turned out that was the first sign....aging sucks man.

I can't find any information on training your eyes or retraining them.

okay maybe its a foot, like when you read small print on a paper, I just have to back it up about a foot or so, where I never did before.

Staring at a computer makes you near sighted. You are farsighted right now because you are getting old.

Hopefully when I'm older, somehow my nearsightedness and farsightedness will even out for good 20/20 vision. :Sad Face:
